The realm of story entices us to enter the writer’s imagination and make ourselves at home there. We tell children stories to entertain or as cautionary tales. Later, we read to escape, to learn, or to chase away boredom. Part of discovering who you are as a writer is developing a taste for what you like to read. Do you enjoy stories about romance or adventure? Imaginary creatures or supernatural powers? Tales from ordinary life or those from an alternate universe? Do you like pared down prose or long detailed description? Consider what keeps you turning the page until you get to the end. Stories are all around us; yet paradoxically, the wealth of material makes it hard to know what to write. Good thing, then, that the internet is brimming with stories from the underside, the dark side, and outside. Take some time clicking on the links in the Blog Roll to the right of this post and in the comment box below, post a link to a story that you especially liked--or didn’t like--and explain why. Give us a mini-review. In the meantime, we’ll build a class library of works we can refer to for inspiration.
